Punctures and damaged tyres

Repairing a punctured tyre isn’t always simple.

Depending on the tyre, the puncture location, and number of tyres affected, it can be straightforward or complicated.

Usually, all puncture repairs begin with thoroughly inspecting the tyre’s internal and external sections.

The most common cause of a puncture is a sharp object, like a nail or a screw.

Some objects aren’t long enough to go all the way through. However, the damage they cause increases the risk of a flat tyre or blowout at a later point.

All our repairs are carried out in accordance with British Standards BS AU 159. However, if the puncture occurred on the outer ¼ of the tyre, we would need to replace the tyre.

Tyre Repairs

Slow Punctures

A slow puncture might not be noticeable at first, but nonetheless, the tyre will gradually deflate as the air is slowly released.

Often, drivers return home without realising a tyre is deflated, only to notice the problem the subsequent day.

If, after the inspection, the tyre is deemed repairable, a puncture kit will be used to fix the damage.

Frequently asked questions.

Our most frequently asked questions.

How do you check your tyres are safe?2023-12-20T15:28:17+00:00

To check if your tyres are safe, use a 20p coin. If the inner rim is hidden, your tyre is likely safe with at least 3mm of tread. If you can see the outer rim, it might be less than 3mm and unsafe. You can also speak to one of our technicians for a safety check.

Is it worth repairing a tyre puncture?2023-12-20T15:18:48+00:00

Whether it’s worth repairing a puncture depends largely on the size and location of the puncture in your tyre. Before proceeding with a repair, it’s advisable to have your tyres thoroughly checked by a professional technician.

How much should a puncture repair cost?2023-12-20T15:18:28+00:00

The cost of a puncture repair can vary, so it’s advisable to contact us for accurate pricing details. Several factors can influence the cost, such as the type of tyre, the severity and location of the puncture, and any additional services or materials required for the repair.

What is the lifespan of a new tyre?2023-12-20T15:29:06+00:00

The lifespan of a new tyre can vary significantly, influenced by both the type of tyre and how it’s used. Different tyres have different tread patterns and rubber compounds, which affect their durability. Factors like driving habits, road conditions, and maintenance practices also play a role in determining how long a tyre will last.

Can someone come out to change a tyre?2023-12-20T15:27:21+00:00

Absolutely, you can always give us a call to learn more about our mobile tyre-fitting services and our availability.

Factors Affecting A Puncture

A tyre repair should be considered only if the damage is within the central ¾ of the tyre. If the puncture is outside the “minor repair area,” then the British Standard BS AU 159 specifies that the damage is too close to the sidewall to guarantee a safe repair.

However, after inspection, a technician might determine that the tyre’s current condition renders repair impractical.

Puncture repairs are not advisable in cases where the tyre exhibits serious damage which our technicians will inspect for.
